Motherhood in the Third Degree

Are there degrees of motherhood? When I first became pregnant I believed that was motherhood. And then Finley was born and that was truly motherhood. Then Evelyn was born and that was truly motherhood. Now, tonight, this morning, whatever time it is, I am sewing the seam closed on a stuffed teddy bear for Finley because there will be a Teddy Bear Masquerade party tomorrow at his pre-school. I suddenly gain a deeper understanding of what it means to love a child as I stitch together this toy, in the middle of the night. I may try duct tape next time. But then maybe, that's what it means to be a father....

Glorious Saturday for Carving Pumpkins

Saturday, October 25th, 2008, was an incredibly beautiful fall day and we thoroughly enjoyed it together. Watching Finley really get into his pumpkin carving this year was fun. Of course, Evelyn was right in there, too. We raked leaves together and played in the sandbox and swung/swang? on the swingset. Todd was sitting in the sun in his lawn chair sketching out a model train layout and Finley came into the house, "Mom, I want a pencil and paper like Dad." So I found him a clipboard and some paper and a pencil and he sat right next to Todd and sketched jack-o-lantern faces. It was so adorable watching them both with their heads down, intent on their designs. All in all, a precious day, full of beautiful life moments.
